Unbeknownst to them

No one seemed to notice;
They just drove along with the traffic
That they always accompanied.
Two cars among the many drove in separate lanes,
Only a few car lengths apart.
They were lovers saying adieu,
Driving in similar yet vastly different directions.

I wonder how many others,
Among the thousands of cars that I see,
Are also lovers separated by the windows
Of their cars and the little air between.
I wonder how many others
Have just said adieu and ask themselves the question:
"Does anyone know what pain and loss
We are experiencing at this moment?"

Yet I also wonder how many,
Among the thousands of cars that I see,
Are lovers coming one to the other,
Joining again after a long bitter time apart.
I look forward to again being among that number soon.
